5 Peaks Challenge in aid of Stamp Out Suicide

5 Peaks Challenge in aid of Stamp Out Suicide

In January 2024, Paul Cardwell, Director at Capital Reinforcing decided to set up a challenge to raise much-needed funds for a local Charity, Stamp out Suicide. Capital Reinforcing has been a supporter of Stamp Out Suicide for many years, attending various functions throughout the years and making multiple donations.

This time we decided that we could raise some funds through our business contacts and personal friends and family. Initially, Paul was going to be joined by his two sons Callum and Conall but as news got out in our office about the challenge, we were soon joined by our work colleagues Joe Mullin (Production Manager) and Louise Kavanagh (HSEQ Officer) who was going to do the three of the five peaks.

Most people in the UK are aware of the 3 Peaks challenge which is Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in North Wales. However we decided that we would take it up a notch and take on the two largest peaks in Ireland as well, Carrauntoohil in Co. Kerry and Slieve Donard in Co. Down. The idea was to climb the tallest 5 Peaks in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales one after another.

We had set our journey from the first peak at Carrauntoohil in Co. Kerry, and calculated that from start to finish from the first to the last mountain, Snowdon in North Wales it would take us 6 days including travel. The entire journey would span 1400 miles and we would ascended and descended 10,600 metres.

Everything went to plan, well apart from poor Louise turning her ankle on the way down from Ben Nevis, but fair play she stayed with the team until the end and helped us complete the challenge on time.

We have so many people to thank that helped us on our journey, especially our main sponsors,

Capital Reinforcing who donated in excess of £13k.

In total we raised over £26.5k in aid of Stamp Out Suicide, this money will go a long way in helping those who need it most.

Suicide is one of the biggest forms of preventable death in the UK and Ireland, and most of us know someone at first or second hand that has been affected by it.  Mental health is one of the biggest issues affecting all ages of life, male or female and most of the time there isn’t the help out there to deal with someone who is being affected with suicidal thoughts.  Stamp Out Suicide was set up to help with that initial contact, and provide the support that someone needs right away, not weeks away which could save their lives.  At Capital Reinforcing we have been a big supporter of SOS and we thought this was a fitting challenge not just for ourselves but to help spread the word about the good work that SOS do and get the message out that there is help available.
