Drax Power Station – Storage Silos for Biomass Fuel 

Project Overview

This project exemplifies the effectiveness of slipform construction in overcoming challenging ground conditions and delivering time-critical results. Capital Reinforcing’s contribution of over 1200 tonnes of reinforcement in just a few weeks played a critical role in the success of the project, which involved the construction of two large silos, each with a diameter of 30 meters and a height of 15 meters.

Key Highlights of the Project

Slipform Construction for Speed and Efficiency:

Due to poor ground conditions, the decision was made to construct the silos using slipform construction. This method allowed for a rapid build, reducing the construction timeline significantly. The total construction process, from the first site delivery to the final site removal, was completed within just four weeks.

Impressive Rate of Rise:

The first silo was completed in an astonishing 52 hours, with a rise rate of 3.5 meters per 12-hour shift. This speed was critical in ensuring the project stayed on track and ahead of schedule.

Precision and Quality Control:  

Despite the rapid construction pace, the top of the silo wall was constructed with remarkable precision, being within just 25mm of the target height. This was achieved through the installation of a mechanical framework fitted at the top of the silo, ensuring consistency and accuracy in the build.

Efficient Dismantling and Re-assembly:

Once the first silo was completed, the slipform rig was dismantled in 16 segments, each cleaned and reassembled for use on the second silo. The entire dismantle and re-assembly process between the two silos was completed in just 7 days, contributing to the overall time savings.

Completion Ahead of Schedule:

With the second silo completed in just 48 hours, the project was finished five weeks ahead of the original 9-week program, highlighting the exceptional coordination, planning, and execution by the project team. 

Outcome

The combination of slipform construction, diligent planning, and Capital Reinforcing’s timely delivery of reinforcement materials led to the successful completion of the project well ahead of schedule, delivering substantial time and cost savings for the client.
